Festival of the Future Brochure and Activities

I was commissioned by the University of Dundee to create an illustration for their online and print brochure for the Festival of the Future, based on several top tips to live more sustainably in everyday life. The festival champions the combination of art, science and culture, to create engaging events and activities, this year themed around connecting with nature and spaces.

There is more information about the festival and events at the link below:

Festival of the Future Website

After receiving the tips from Sustainable Dundee, I created an illustration with a limited colour scheme, encompassing the different tips within a home and street scene, featuring a clothes line, kitchen, charity shop and local food shop, as well as a family on an eco-friendly bike journey.

Festival of the Future Activity Sheets

The latter stage of the project was creating an activity sheet design for the Festival of the Future in collaboration with the University of Dundee and Sustainable Dundee, to be used in the festival’s Sustainability Hub in the Botanic Gardens. The sheets are available to pick up and fill in for the duration of the festival.

The activities are aimed at families, and encourage them to reconsider daily tasks and how they can be more sustainable, and begin their journey to become an Eco-Hero. The front page consists of a ‘Sustainable Pledge’ activity, encouraging individuals to pick one thing they’ll do to be more sustainable, while also designing and decorating their Eco-Hero outfit.

The back page features a checklist of different eco-friendly tasks families can colour in as they complete, before becoming an Eco-Hero of Dundee. The Law Monument, Stack Tower in Lochee and V&A Dundee feature in the lower half of the illustration, above some QR codes for further tips on living sustainably.

Centre Spread

The centre spread of the activity sheet features a series of different tasks an Eco-Hero might complete in a day, including packing a lunch box, boiling a kettle, recycling plastics, food shopping, making meals and going to bed. For each of the activities, families are encouraged to work together to think of different ways to limit their environmental impact through the different daily tasks.
